30th May 2025 | Not a Technical Interview
Today was hilarious. I was messaged to my work text app to check if I could do a call that's just a 10 mins chat at 3PM. I was busy outside and mentioned if it could be done on Monday instead.
A conversation happened and I decided that I can do it today at 3PM. I was told it's just a 10 mins chat. Upon the call at 3PM, I shared details about myself. After that it became a technical interview where I was asked very reasonable questions about my knowledge on ReactJS but lots of it were memory based. I knew the answers and I could answer them, but due to not having touched ReactJS for awhile, I couldn't answer them as much as I could have had I revised it.
After the call ended I was told not to worry so much about the technical interview, which is nice haha because while a technical interview happened, it wasn't about that.
I appreciate him saying that and I don't know what they were assessing but it was a funny experience. I of course hope to get it so that I can become even better in my ReactJS. However, if it doesn't go accordingly, I wouldn't in anyway consider that a defeat or disadvantage.
There's also another reason to that that I want to highlight. My senior who very competently taught me ReactJS has moved to a different country. While she's not recognised by one key leader in our old team as being as capable as the other person, who is actually arrogant and seemed like the most skilled developer, she certainly is. Based on my experience with them, they are both quite closely technically skilled, but that other arrogant seeming person seemed to be perceived incorrectly as being the most skilled.
While she has ample experiences under her belt, she chose to work in a startup doing what she's good at. To me, this isn't a setback, but a step forward because it's an experience to learn how to build her own company and how running a startup is like.
With that mindset in me, if I'm honest, I kinda am excited to work in a startup. Not one that's just started or struggling, but one that's promising and well managed by competent leaders. I might move on to do a startup or some SMEs. I'm not sure if doing corporate actually allows me to become better at a faster pace, or even earn the salary that I deserve. It hasn't seemed that way to me and for lots of people who I have spoken to.
All I know is that lots of highly skilled software engineers either stay in corporate being paid well with their high positions and severe stress. Or the rest, who move on to start their own startups or companies. If I'm honest, owning a company and managing one, even if it were much smaller in scale or may earn less, sounds more like success to me than those who stayed in corporate. However, in no way do I mean that corporate is bad or always worse, I'm mostly referring to this in the context of middle-aged highly skilled software engineering workers. Working in corporate has lots of benefits as well, but for sure it's not significantly better an experience than running your own startup/business or company, where you actually own an asset and have more freedom over how you can do your work.

Component-based architecture
Virtual DOM
Declarative syntax
Server-side rendering
Large ecosystem
Trends making ReactJS popular-
WebAssembly for faster computations
Better server-side rendering for improved performance and SEO
Improved state management libraries like Recoil
These are the trends reshaping the future of Reactjs, and making it unique than others.
Skills and Responsibilities of a ReactJS Developer
You must find the right developer with the right skills to fulfill each responsibility.
Write clean, efficient code using ReactJS and related tools.
Work with designers to create a consistent UI.
Connect with backend systems to display data.
Test the app thoroughly to catch bugs.

Hiring a bad developer can impact your business brand negatively. Start by
Define your project goals
What is your budget?
Project deadlines and expectations
What skills do you require?
Define engagement model- outsourcing or in-house Reactjs developers
Explore different engagement models and understand if you want to hire from an outsourcing company like OnGraph or need full-time Reactjs Development Services committed throughout each development phase.
Both models have their advantages and disadvantages and the choice completely depends on your project needs and specifications.
Test Technical assessments
A strong technical background and understanding of job requirements are essential. General interview questions and tests can be misleading, favoring candidates who aren't genuinely skilled.

This approach allows you to observe their problem-solving approach and assess their ability to devise action plans to tackle tasks.
Assess your best candidate
After technical assessments, conduct a non-technical interview to understand the candidate better. Here's a checklist for selecting the best candidate.
ReactJS Experience: Prioritize developers experienced with ReactJS, especially on projects similar to yours. Assess their proficiency with React components, state management, and the overall ecosystem.
Knowledge of Related Technologies: Look for familiarity with technologies like Redux, GraphQL, and NodeJS commonly used alongside ReactJS.
Portfolio: You must review a developer's portfolio to understand their working style and project management abilities, skills, and experience.
Communication Skills: They must be able to communicate and collaborate effective with cross-functional teams to understand and explain project requirements.
Problem-Solving Skills: Seek ReactJS developers who can think creatively and solve complex challenges. Ask about their past problem-solving experiences.

React Coding Interview Questions on Hooks and Context API
React has become extremely popular, as a JavaScript library for creating user interfaces. As Reacts popularity continues to soar frontend developer interviews often include react interview questions related to React to assess a candidate's coding skills.
React Hooks and Context API are relatively advanced React concepts that development teams want senior candidates to demonstrate expertise in. This blog discusses the top React coding questions on Hooks and Context that experienced React devs should prepare for. Read on to get an overview of the key concepts tested in React interviews, sample code snippets, and online editor links to practice.
1. What Are React Hooks and Why Are They Used?
With the introduction of React Hooks, in version 16.8 you can now use state and other React features without having to write class components. These hooks greatly simplify state management in components, making the code more understandable and facilitating testing. Hooks provide a mechanism to share stateful logic across different components without changing the hierarchy of the components. It is important to understand hooks to create modern React applications.
2. Explain the useState Hook in React.
The useState hook is the foundation of state management in functional components. It allows you to inject React state into function components. When you declare a state variable with useState, you receive a pair: the current state value and a function for updating it. The underlying principle of how useState works is essential to comprehend state management in functional components.
3. How Does useEffect Hook Work?
In functional components, side effects are performed through the useEffect hook. The functionality is similar to componentDidMount, componentDidUpdate, and componentWillUnmount in React class lifecycle methods, but it is unified with one API. Managing side effects like data fetching, subscriptions, or manually updating the DOM from React components is impossible without first understanding useEffect.
4. What is the useContext Hook and Its Use Cases?
UseContext hook is a way of creating common data that is accessible at any level of the component hierarchy without the necessity of passing the props manually to each level. It’s used to communicate data such as user authentication, themes or language preference between components seamlessly. Understanding useContext is vital for effectively controlling data and communication between components in large React applications.
5. Can You Explain Custom Hooks?
Custom Hooks refer to the mechanism to reuse stateful logic in several components. They enable you to pull component logic into functions that can be reused. A custom Hook is a JavaScript function whose name starts with ”use” and can call other Hooks. Knowing how to make and use Custom Hooks can significantly reduce the complexity of your component logic and make your code more maintainable.
Conclusion
This guide summarizes expected react coding interview questions around React Hooks and Context API - two key advanced topics for experienced candidates.
